Detailing his journey from India to the US, Manjit said: “On July 24, 2024, Robin was taken to Mumbai from Delhi. Then, he was taken to different countries like Guyana, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, before reaching the US on January 22”

It took him seven months, travelling through different countries to reach the Unites States of America from India. It took only 12 days before he was deported to India.
Robin Handa (26), a resident of Ismailabad in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district, was among 104 deported Indians who reached Amritsar Wednesday in a US military aircraft.
Robin had done a computer engineering course from an industrial training institute (ITI). His father Manjit Handa says: “We sold our one-acre land and spent Rs 45 lakh to send him abroad. The travel agent had promised to send him to the US within one month. However, it took seven months for him to reach the US”.

After returning home, Robin said: “I wanted to go abroad for employment. My journey from India to the USA which included road, air and sea routes was full of hardships. We were not given proper food. As soon as I entered the US on January 22 afternoon, I surrendered before the border police. They took us to a detention camp”.
Sharing his experience before being deported, Robin said: “We were handcuffed and chains were put on our legs. We were taken out from the detention camp during the night hours in a bus. We were shocked when we saw the military plane. We were put in the plane forcefully.”
Another Haryana youth from Kharak Bura village of Jind district, Rohit Sharma (21) is also among those who were deported on Wednesday. Rohit is the youngest among three siblings. His father Suresh Kumar, an ex-serviceman, said that Rohit had initially gone to UK on study visa by incurring an expenditure of nearly Rs 9 lakh. He used to work in stores there apart from his study. Sources close to the family say that Rohit had reached the US on January 20 this year. His father told The Indian Express: “He went to USA from US through dunki route by incurring an expenditure of Rs 15 lakh. As soon as he reached the US, he was put in a detention camp there. On February 3, he was deported back to India.”
Kumar is happy that his son has returned home safely. “I don’t want him to appear before the media. I don’t want to give him unnecessary stress.”
