Hallomajra-Zirakpur road to be widened to reduce traffic snarls
With the widening of the road, the traffic coming from the Zirakpur side to Dakshin Marg will not create a traffic jam and the risk of accidents will also be reduced.

To deal with traffic jams and black spots, the Chandigarh Administration is all set to widen the road from Hallomajra to the Zirakpur border from 150 feet to 200 feet. This project would come up at a cost of Rs 10 crore and is expected to complete within nine months. It is also supposed to put an end to traffic bottlenecks.
The route always sees heavy traffic because of the vehicles that enter and exit Chandigarh and Punjab. Many accidents have also been taking place on the route. With the widening of the road, the traffic coming from the Zirakpur side to Dakshin Marg will not create a traffic jam and the risk of accidents will also be reduced.
As of now, few trees on both sides have been cut to widen the roads and construct 8 feet wide cycle tracks. It will take around 9 months for the same.
The engineering department has decided to widen the slow carriageway from Hallomajra light point to the Zirakpur border, converting from 16 feet to 24 feet and making an 8 feet wide cycle track on both sides of the road, from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur border.
A senior officer of the Chandigarh administration said, “the work will begin next month as the tender has been floated. Also, we have decided that the work will begin next month.”
From the Tribune Chowk to the Zirakpur border, there will be cycle tracks on both the sides, while from the Hallomajra light points to the Zirakpur border, the slow carriageway will be widened from 16 feet to 24 feet. The total stretch is 4 km, he said.
Two intersections at Hallomajra lights points and Raipur Khurd light points will be channelised for left and right turns for regulating traffic movement.
To travel through this 4 kilometres stretch, during peak hours in the morning and evening, it takes nearly thirty minutes for motorists.
Sanjeev Vashisht, who takes the same route daily to enter Chandigarh said that it was highly congested. “I feel that apart from widening the road, it is important that some police officials should also be deployed along with synchronising the traffic lights especially during the peak hours like office timing in the morning and evening.”
