Guilt Trip

Two city-based youngsters explore the dark side of love and betrayal in their debut short film.

Guilt is an extremely burdensome emotion — one that hangs around the neck like an albatross. “So when we decided to make our debut short film, we zeroed in on this emotion and weaved a story around it,” says Moht R Gupta, a second-year BBA student at Amity, Chandigarh. Along with his friend Samarth Mehta, a second-year BSc student at Frameboxx, Chandigarh, they produced their first short film, Teqsir, and uploaded it on YouTube.

At roughly 18 minutes, Teqsir — which means guilt — derives its title from the Azerbaijan/Persian language. Conceived last June, the boys pooled in their resources and shot the film in the city with local actors Vivek Rana, Shivanika Dhami and Shubham Sharma. The story follows a chapter in the life of Aarav, who is weighed down by the mysterious murder of his girlfriend.

A difficult subject, admit its makers, the film suffers from flaws. With an inaudible, muffled audio and amateurish editing and post production, Teqsir loses most of its steam. Still, encouraged by their first shot at filmmaking, they also released it under their production house, Life Broadcast Factory. “We hope to make experimental cinema, narrate stories of different lives and sections of society, which are inter-related at a macro-level,” says Gupta.

“We were about to make a film on someone’s life but that didn’t take off, and we decided to make one on guilt. It’s something we all face in our lives, but what happens when it overtakes you, that’s what we were trying to achieve via Teqsir,” says Gupta, adding, “Getting up at 4 am, arranging for finances and equipment, and taking time out — filmmaking is s a demanding job.”

The film, whose original soundtrack titled Aas has been rendered by Yamunanagar-based band Rrosh, is available on YouTube.
