GMCH-32 hosts workshop to provide cardiac life support training

The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32) is hosting the 25th Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Workshop, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA). The three-day workshop, which began on March 17, aims to provide medical professionals working in hospitals and medical colleges across northern India with skill development and training in cardiac life support.

Under the aegis of LSA-ITC, New Delhi, the workshop is being overseen by Prof. Jasbinder Kaur, Director Principal of GMCH-32, and Prof. Sanjeev Palta, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The team of instructors comprises AHA-certified instructors from Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, with course coordinators Prof. Manpreet Singh and Prof. Dheeraj Kapoor from GMCH-32.

The workshop was inaugurated today by the chief guest Yashpal Garg, IAS, Secretary Health cum Medical Education and Research, who shared his own experiences and highlighted the need for such skills. He also elaborated on the incident when he performed CPR at Chandigarh Housing Board on January 18, 2023.

The event includes didactic lectures and practical scenario-based simulated training on mannequins and simulators, focusing on the management of in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, chest pain, and stroke. More than 64 delegates are attending the workshop, and more than 34 certified instructors will be imparting their knowledge over the course of the three days.

This workshop is an important initiative to equip medical professionals with the necessary skills to handle cardiac emergencies and save lives, said a doctor. With the AHA accreditation, the workshop is expected to have a far-reaching impact in improving cardiac care.
