The six Congress MLAs who were served notice for breach of privilege in Punjab Legislative Assembly during the Budget session appeared before Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon on Tuesday and were given time till May 10 to file their written replies.
However, firebrand MLA Sukhpal Khaira told the Speaker that he will not appear before Sarabjit Singh Makkar,MLA,who is Chairman of the Privileges Committee,as the Makkar clan is being boycotted in Jalandhar over the murder of a hotelier allegedly by the MLAs nephew. Khaira accordingly filed his reply later in the day.
The Congress legislators had been served notice for protesting against the treasury benches by climbing on the table kept in front of the Speakers chair.
In his reply,Khaira wrote that he would not appear before Sarabjit Singh Makkar, who is chairman of the committee,as you are aware Ram Simran alias Prince Makkar,Akali councillor from Jalandhar and nephew of Sarabjit Singh Makkar, has murdered an innocent young man Gurkirat Singh Gikki a few days back.
Khaira wrote that in deference to the public mood and the call for boycott given by the public,I have decided that I will also boycott Sarabjit Singh Makkar in his capacity as Chairman Privileges Committees and will not appear before him.
Khaira has demanded that the Speaker either replace Makkar as the panel chief or decide his case ex-parte,for he will not be swayed in his resolve to boycott Makkar.
