Jimny, BMW to Mercedes: Gang ‘selling luxury cars with fake number plates’ busted in Ludhiana

The Ludhiana Police on Wednesday arrested two members of a gang and identified another for allegedly selling luxury cars after installing fake number plates.

The police said that the gang used to get these cars from other states and UTs, including Delhi, without getting the no-objection certificate (NOC), and then remove their original number plates. They would then install fake number plates bearing Punjab numbers, prepare fake documents and then sell them in Punjab, thus duping the buyers.

The police said that five luxury cars have been recovered from the accused including Maruti Jimny, BMW, Hyundai Creta, Toyota Innova and a Mercedes.

The arrested accused have been identified as Arshdeep Singh, 40, of Rajguru Nagar, Ludhiana, and Amarjit Singh, 43, of Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar, Ludhiana. The third accused has been identified as Amanpreet Singh, alias Sunny of Chhawni Mohalla, Ludhiana. He is yet to be arrested.

The police said Arshdeep Singh was also in possession of a fake police ID, which he used to evade toll plazas and police checkpoints.

The police said that Arshdeep Singh and Amarjit Singh were arrested following a tip-off when they were waiting for a customer in a BMW vehicle at CRP Colony, Dugri here. The BMW’s original number plate of Delhi was removed and replaced with a fake Punjab number to dupe the customer, said the police.

An FIR against the accused was registered under sections 204, 205, 318(4), 336(3), 338, 339, 340(2), 341(2) of BNS at Dugri police station.

The police said that absconding accused Amanpreet Singh was also previously booked in two FIRs for theft in Sangrur and Ropar. He is out on bail.

Amarjit Singh is a car mechanic, while Arshdeep Singh is a dealer of second-hand cars, the police added.
