The inability of the Municipal Corporation to auction some of the parking lots in the city is adding to the parking woes of people. The worst affected are those visiting the Deputy Commissioners office in Sector 17.
With both the parking lots failing to fetch a good price at a recent auction, its virtually a free run at the parking lots near the Deputy Commissioners office with cars parked in a haphazard manner. Those visiting the office can be seen struggling to first park their vehicles and later to get them out.
In the absence of anybody manning the parking lots, visitors can be seen arguing with one another over parking spaces. This is despite the fact that there are two underground parking lots right in front of the DC office building. While the one which has a capacity of about 60 cars is being used to store the documents pertaining to the Elections Department, the other one, which was used for two-wheelers,is being utilised as a store house with huge generator sets lying in the basement parking.
Consequently,two-wheelers are parked in the corridor leading to DC office from the office of SDO (buildings),making it difficult for walkers to use the corridor to walk down.
Surjit Singh,55,a resident of Sector 15,who went to the DC office to deposit certain documents regarding his property, said,I reached here at noon today, and for 45 minutes,I kept driving through the two parking lots to park my car. All the cars were parked in a haphazard manner. Finally,I had to park my car in the Sector 17 plaza and had to walk down almost half a km. Why cannot the authorities do something about the parking space when they are fully aware that hundreds of people visit the offices here everyday? Why cannot they make alternative arrangements for the general public?
Suresh, another resident who was called by EO officials to verify certain documents regarding violations in his house in Sector 45,said,The officials have so conveniently reserved the front parking for themselves and other official vehicles but what about the public and senior citizens like us? Where should we park our vehicles?
Sources in the MC said there was no plan to re-auction these parking lots in the near future.
