Grace & grandeur
Renowned Mohiniattam exponent Jayaprabha Menon mesmerized the city audience with her enchanting performance at the Bhaskar Rao Indoor Auditorium. The programme was organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in collaboration with Pracheen Kala Kendra under the Horizon series. Mohiniattam is one of the most lyrical classical dance forms of India, its noted for its graceful and sensuous movements with no terse footwork. The word Mohini stands for an enchantress,a beautiful woman who seduces others for a particular purpose, while Attam means dance. So Mohiniattam is the dance of the enchantress. Jayaprabha Menon, disciple of guru Bharathi Shivaji, the name synonymous with Mohiniyatam,is one of the most accomplished dancers of this dance form. Jayaprabha brings to her audience a refreshing presentation of Mohiniyatam, owing to her long years of experience as a performer and her deep understanding of the aesthetics of the dance form. She began her performance with Unn Ganapathy,a popular regional lyric of Kerela paying obeisance to Lord Ganesha, then presenting Bhaja Govindam,Ashtapadi,Yasodhara anf finally Varsha Gamana.
