In a first of its kind initiative, faculty from the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management will roll out a nutritious cooking workshop for the defence forces!
It’s not often that one hears of civilian-army alliances but this ones merged like butter on hot toast! Since January this year,Col U S Rawat from the Sri Ganganagar Military Station has been trying to get faculty from the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management (CIHM) in Sector 42,to come over. The concept was okayed from day one,its just that we were trying to get suitable dates for everyone, informs the Colonel,as he took seat in the principals office this Monday afternoon. Come May 25,and a four-member team, including principal TK Razdan will roll out a specially planned workshop for those stationed at Sri Ganganagar,a first of its kind for both parties. Its a workshop on nutritious and healthy cooking. Our men in uniform have physically demanding jobs and in todays times its imperative to share notes on fit food, remarks Razdan, who will be accompanied by fellow faculty members – Vishal Kalia,Ashish Bose and Arvind Verma, all of whom are from various departments at the institute such as house keeping, food and beverage and more.
Col Rawat approached us with the idea of conducting a one-day workshop that could talk about practical and handy tips on how to retain nutritive value of food, modern cooking tips and more. On our part we will be putting forth a complete presentation including live demonstrations, faculty member Vishal Kalia further explains. Making the most of the workshop will be families of both officers and jawans stationed at Sri Ganganagar. There will be over 400 families in attendance, informs Col Rawat who was put on the job of arranging the same by the present GOC-in-C Maj Gen A K Bakshi. We realised that the troops were used to eating oil-rich and spicy food which in the longer run serves no health benefits. Thats when we decided to approach CIHM for help, explains the officer.
Interestingly, while this is for the first time that CIHM is rolling out a workshop for the Army,in the past the faculty has conducted training sessions for the staff from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). We imparted training in areas like cooking, restaurant service and event management, informs the principal who is open to further such gestures of goodwill. Its always timed keeping in mind the academic roster and the availability of faculty. At the end of the day its a learning experience for everyone, Razdan smiles and sums up.
