Floods cause Rs 28 crore in damage

The recent floods in Fazilka and Ferozepur districts has damaged infrastructure worth over Rs 28 crore — this excludes damage of crops which are still under water.

According to Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner Dr S Karuna Raju,damage worth Rs 18 crore was witnessed in Ferozepur alone. While a 30-km stretch of road has been washed away,three bridges have collapsed. “The amount includes damages done to drains and canals. But girdwari of fields is not possible at the moment because more than 27,000 acres of agriculture land is still under water in Ferozepur,” said Raju.

Though the Fazilka administration is yet to send its report,sources claimed that that infrastructure worth Rs 10 crore have been damaged. More than 19,000 acres of agriculture land in still under water. “Our patwaris visited the fields five times. But every time,they returned empty-handed,” said Raju.

Meanwhile in Abohar,more than 7,000 acres of agriculture land has been flooded due to water being drained out of Lambi.

Ferozepur Chief Agriculture Officer B S Chahal said: “Earlier,this area was 3,000 acres. Now,it has increased to 7,000,but we have no choice. Crop damage in Muktsar and Malaut is spread over 31,000 acres.”
