Fire guts ladies’ Bar room at Punjab and Haryana High Court
Sartej Singh Narula, president of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, said the fire broke out early Monday. A suspected short-circuit is under investigation.

A major fire broke out in the ladies’ Bar room of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the early hours of Monday, gutting the room and damaging two adjoining chambers.
Sartej Singh Narula, president, Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, said he received a call from the high court at around 4.45 am, and immediately rushed to the premises. “We called for fire tenders and the flames were doused by 5.15 am,” Narula said.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, Narula said a short circuit is suspected. “We suspect it was a short-circuit, but the cause is still under investigation,” he added.
According to Narula, the timely response of the fire department prevented the blaze from spreading further. “The flames would have reached the main bar room had the fire not been doused in time,” he said.
By morning, the ladies’ Bar room, reserved for women advocates, was reduced to a soot-covered shell. The adjacent rooms also sustained significant damage.
Established in its current form on November 1, 1966, following the States Reorganisation Act, the Punjab and Haryana High Court is known for its modernist architecture by Le Corbusier.
