(Express photo)After a three-month gap, the Chandigarh Police has got a full-time chief with the appointment of 1997-batch IPS officer Dr Sagar Preet Hooda as Director General of Police (DGP). A senior officer of the Delhi Police, Hooda was accorded a ceremonial welcome at a parade in Sector 26, where he inspected the guard of honour.
He was received by IG Pushpendra Kumar, SSP Kanwar Deep Kaur, and other top officials before proceeding to the police headquarters in Sector 9 to formally assume charge. Later, he reviewed the city’s law-and-order situation in meetings with senior officers.
Speaking to the media, Hooda expressed pride at returning to where his policing career began. “I am feeling really great as Chandigarh is my city and Chandigarh Police is like my parents’ police because my first posting started from here, so it’s a very good feeling,” he said.
Outlining his priorities, Hooda pledged to strengthen ongoing initiatives in information technology, cyber security, and community policing. He also underscored the importance of implementing the new criminal laws: “The new laws are revolutionary, victim-centric, and justice-oriented. They have been made keeping public service in mind. Our first and most important priority will be their proper implementation.”
Asked about his Delhi policing experience and plans for the Union Territory, Hooda said, “We will hold meetings with officers to review ongoing projects. Everything is going well here, and it will continue to improve. We will share new initiatives with you in due course.” He also noted the region’s proximity to Punjab and promised to review security challenges and take appropriate measures.
Later in the day, Hooda called on Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria at Raj Bhavan, and met Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and Home Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar at the Secretariat.
Hooda, who served his first posting as an ASP in Chandigarh, is the second Delhi Police officer to be appointed DGP of the Union Territory.
