Rayat-Bahra’s Formula car revs up for the Super Mileage Competition

Bragging of a 260 km/hr and sprayed in a spanking white and blue,this one’s a raging beauty. Engineered to win,’India’s first 600cc turbo charged Formula Car’,was today unveiled by ten students of Rayat Institute of Engineering & Information Technology,who,by the way,are also the brains behind this piece of solid horsepower. “It took eight very tedious and trying months to conceptualize,design,engineer and test it,” tells Ashish Das,a student,as he rolls out the car at Hotel Piccadilly and is all set to take it for the Formula SAE International Competition 2009 at Fontana,California,USA,to be held from June 17 to June 20. “It’s India’s first 600 cc formula car with a turbo charger,has a five speed gearing mechanism,can reach upto 110 km/hr within 4.4 seconds and weighs 300 kg,” Das shoots the dynamics and gives details about its cutting edge maneuverability,aerodynamic design,fantastic ergonomics and advance safety equipment.

The high-tech creation designed and analyzed using softwares like Pro-E and AN-SYS,”Vice Chairman of the institute,S Gurvinder Singh Bahra,and the team including MD Prof C M Behal and Director Dr TP Singh helped us create a car that will participate in SAE,an annual competition that aims to discover best formula car based upon handling,performance,manufacturability,design,cost and endurance,” chips in Kenneth Dean,who’s happy to be able to participate in the contest that will see entries from 35 countries across the globe including UK,USA,Italy,Japan,Brazil,Germany and Australia among others.

An initiative of second and third year students of the institute,amongst those who helped design the model are Prasanjeet Das,Tarun,Parshant Kumar,Ashok Singh,Honey Sharma,Nitin Saini,Ramesh Chander and Jagatit Singh Parmar. The faculty advisors include Jujhar Singh,Rajesh Chaudhary,Dr Manoj Bali Ranjit Randhawa and Amrinder Singh. “Getting the required parts and compiling them took many hours of research on the internet and visits to stores across the nation,” tells Amrinder,who provided technical assistance. With the institutes last year’s super-mileage car winning the first place in Asia and 13th position in world,let’s see how far does this one go!
