Fancy Frills

Mohali will have its first fashion show at a mall today

Even though fashion choreographer Kaushik Ghosh insists fashion shows in malls are a done thing in the metros,it’s definitely a first for the city. Today more than a dozen models will showcase collections by student designers from the International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT),Mohali at the bustling atrium of DLF Mall housed in the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park. “It’s our annual show and this time around we wanted Lakshaya 2010 to be unique. The mall is a happening shopper’s destination,so we chose it because of the scope of interaction between shoppers and the students,” says the institute’s director Kawaljeet Singh.

The venue apart, the show is special on many other counts as well. Comprising 14 rounds, the show will see models like former Miss India Shriya Kishore, fashion week regulars Sahiba Singh and Shipra Malik walk the ramp. Further, the mall’s escalators will serve as a moving ramp. “Frankly, there’s a thrill about a new format. I have so far choreographed fashion shows in a mall setup in cities like Delhi and Mumbai but never made use of the escalators,” remarked Ghosh, who recently choreographed the Asian Bridal Show at Kuala Lumpur.

Back at Chandigarh,as many as 50 students will be passing out of IIFT this year. “Despite the market being slow,we have managed 100 percent placement for our designers with well-known names in the industry,” Singh mentioned. The various rounds will present the theme-based collections. “As many as 70 ensembles, both contemporary as well as traditional, will be showcased on the ramp,” informs IIFT’s principal Shameer Kaur.
