With an eye on the Assembly polls due next year,Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and BJP state president Khimi Ram on Thursday reached Sangrah — an interior area of the backward Sirmaur district — to launch a series of development projects.

The biggest highlight of the day was the presence of Hirdaya Ram — a Himachal Administrative Officer, who had quit his job on Wednesday — in most public rallies and official functions. There was, however,no word from the chief minister or the state party chief about Hirdaya Ram being fielded as the party candidate in the Assembly elections.

“I have served the state both as a low level officer and as Kinnaur (officiating) Deputy Commissioner. But now,I have decided to take a plunge in politics to serve the people of my area,” he said while addressing a public meeting, where he shared the dais Dhumal and other BJP leaders.

The seat has fallen vacant due to demise of Congress MLA Dr Prem Singh.

The projection of Hirdaya Ram as the BJP candidate from the area, however, has caused heartburns among party BJP cadres in the constituency. “There is still hope that the party will read the ground realities and take a suitable decision to field a potential leader instead of one,who had jumped the queue to marginalise partymen. It is unfair and will demoralise party workers in the state in the run-up to the Assembly polls,” said a ticket aspirant.

Meanwhile,Dhumal announced that government officers, officials and contractors completing construction works of developmental projects before stipulated period will be honoured by the government. He assured of opening of a SDM office at Sangrah. He also laid the foundation of the community health centre to be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.05 crore.
