Exemplary punishment for robbing man,stealing vehicle: 2 get 10-year RI,Rs 10,000 fine

The court held both the accused,Vikramjeet and Tarseem Garg,guilty under Section 392 of the IPC for robbery.

Observing that the court is bound to see the ill-effects on society and cannot take a lenient view,Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurvinder Kaur on Wednesday awarded an exemplary punishment of 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 to two youths for robbing a man of his cash and gold chain before running away with his vehicle last year.

The court held both the accused,Vikramjeet and Tarseem Garg,guilty under Section 392 of the IPC for robbery. They were caught by the Jalandhar police and revealed to the police that they had a hand in two incidents of robbery in Panchkula as well — one of them was involved in one incident while both of them had involvement in the other.

Delivering the verdict,the Additional District and Sessions Judge observed that keeping in view the gravity of the offence and the manner in which it was committed,it would not be “in the interest of justice to take any lenient view of the matter”.

Public prosecutor Amarjeet Singh said the state had prayed before the court that an exemplary punishment be awarded in the case.

The court held that in case of default in payment of Rs 10,000 fine by each of the convicts,the punishment would increase by another six months.

In January last year,Tarseem of Fazilka area and Vikramjeet of Ferozepur area were caught by Jalandhar police. They told the police they were involved in two robberies in Panchkula too.

While in one of the robberies,the court acquitted Vikramjeet,he and his accomplice were held guilty in the Raipurani robbery case and were awarded the sentence of 10 years.

As per the prosecution,complainant Amarjeet Singh had told the police that as he was driving towards Kala Amb in Himachal Pradesh after dropping his employer,who runs HM steel company in the neighbouring state,at his Sector 7 residence,the accused who were driving a Swift car overtook him and halted the car in front of his Innova around 9.40 pm. The accused who were four in number took out their knives and country-made pistols,and robbed him of Rs 2,500,a gold chain and also asked him to get down from the vehicle before running away with it.
