From Kareena Kapoor to Rakhi Sawant, aspiring celebrities to reality show winners…heres how budding designers at NIIFT would like to dress them up for evening soirees!
If you have been keeping a close watch at the celebrity fashion circuit then you would have realised that dresses are the done thing these days. No red carpet do or movie premiere is complete without the leading ladies stepping out in evening wear that makes the most of dresses – off shoulders to those with added flounce, corsets to princess cuts rule. Keeping that in mind, budding designers (students of Semester V) at the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) decided to put their heads together to come up with a collection of evening wear that could be worn by any fashionista around the globe!
We invited well-known fashion designers Parvesh and Jai,who also happen to be former students of NIIFT to conduct a workshop with the students on evening wear, informed head of the fashion design department,Dr Prabhdip Brar. With the two designers in attendance, the students slipped on their creations and presented their ideas. I have designed keeping in mind Priyanka Chopra as my muse, mentioned a student Aleena who put forth a pretty peacock dress with lots of ruffles at the end. Elsewhere,Shraddha, another student of semester V stitched up a cutesy but rather figure flaunting dress for Rakhi Sawant. Interestingly, the guest faculty chose to do away with the usual teaching methodology and instead gave the students the freedom to work in groups and form stories for their individual garments. The themes went from – a Bollywood divas red carpet dress to a poor waitress striking it rich after a lottery win to controversial reality show contestants to a Time Machine theme party! Its really nice to see the students be so creative but my advice to them is to be really passionate about their work and be a stickler for perfection and finesse, pointed out Parvesh who apart from encouraging the students and their designs, was balanced in his critique during the presentation. We have been there in the students shoes so we know how it is and what it takes to make a mark in the professional world, chorused the two designers as Surbhi Goel, another student walked in wearing a shocking pink evening gown, embellished elegantly. Minimalism can go a long way in making a big impact and sometimes its best not to overdo anything, the designer diktat followed. From the looks of it,the students went by the rules.
