Electricity bills set to soar from August 1 as JERC okays hike of 9.40 pc power tariff in Chandigarh
Although the tariff is much less than the proposed hike of 19 per cent as proposed by Chandigarh Administration, the bills shall rise by 9.40 per cent.

Power bills are all set to go up in Chandigarh from August 1 as the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) approved a hike of 9.40 per cent power tariff.
Although the tariff is much less than the proposed hike of 19 per cent as proposed by Chandigarh Administration, the bills shall rise by 9.40 per cent.
In the domestic category, the commission approved a hike of fixed charge from Rs 15 per month to 30 KWH per month.
Though in the slab of 0-150 kwh, the tariff per unit shall continue to remain Rs 2.75 per unit, the tariff amount shall increase in subsequent slabs.
In the slab of 151-400 kwh per month, the tariff shall increase from Rs 4.25 per unit to Rs 4.80 per unit.
And in the slab above 400 kwh per month, the tariff shall increase from Rs 4.65 per kwh to Rs 5.40 per unit. In the high tension (HT) domestic category, the tariff shall increase from Rs 4.30 per unit to Rs 4.90 per unit.
In the commercial and non-residential buildings category, the major tariff change is in the slab above 400 kwh per month where the tariff has been increased from Rs 5 per unit to Rs 5.90 per unit.
In the category for industries, the commission approved a hike of fixed charge of Rs 240 per Kwh instead of existing Rs 200 per kwh.
Meanwhile, in the per unit tariff, for medium industry, the hike has been approved from Rs 4.20 per unit to Rs 4.50 per unit and for small industry power supply, it has been approved from Rs 4.30 per unit to Rs 4.50 per unit.
What UT had proposed
The Chandigarh Administration had earlier in a petition to the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission submitted a revision in tariff and had proposed a hike of up to 19.44 per cent.
According to the proposal sent in by the UT, in the domestic category, the department had proposed a hike in fixed charge from Rs 15 per month to Rs 40 a month.
The department had proposed a hike from Rs 4.25 to Rs 4.90 per unit in the slab of 151-400 units and an increase from Rs 4.65 to Rs 5.50 had been proposed in the slab of 401 and above units. In the domestic high tension (HT) category, the department had proposed a hike from Rs 4.30 to Rs 5 per unit.
Following the hike proposed by UT, there was widespread opposition and protests across.
To this, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari had said that “the hike in tariffs proposed by the Chandigarh electricity department is unjustified and without any basis. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission should reject the proposal on the threshold itself”.
Later, objections by stakeholders were filed and residents had protested the move.
