Following a complaint of ragging in the boys hostel,eight students have been expelled from the Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA). As a preventive measure,a reshuffling of hostel rooms also took place on Thursday wherein all first year students have been shifted to the ground floor while all other years have been accommodated on the first floor.
The principal of Chandigarh College of Architecture,Pradeep Bhagat said that he was informed by the hostel warden on Tuesday that a student had complained of ragging by seniors on Monday night,following which the college anti-ragging committee investigated the incident and took prompt action.
A first-year student had complained that he was being disturbed while trying to study and had been made to stand for three hours by eight students of second and third year late on Monday night when the warden wasnt present inside the hostel.
The eight students were expelled for a period of four weeks of the 18 weeks in a semester which means that they will lost at least a yea, said Bhagat. He said that though the students had no past record of indiscipline,the college had zero-tolerance to ragging. All eight students are outstation and are expected to return to their home-towns after suspension The hostel has around 25 residents at present and in such a small group,such incidents are rare and unwanted, said Bhagat.
The principal added that the college staff usually try to minimise interaction between freshers and seniors to avoid any negative incident First-year students are sensitive and dont open up easily to college authorities in case of a grievance,said Bhagat.
