The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday questioned Mohali AAP MLA Kulwant Singh in Jalandhar in connection with a money-laundering investigation related to a drug trafficking case.

The ED conducted searches at multiple locations, including on Kulwant Singh’s premises, in Mohali, Amritsar and Ludhiana in the case in October 2023.

With assets worth Rs 1,000 crore, Kulwant Singh is the richest MLA in Punjab. He joined the AAP in December 2021 and won the 2022 Assembly elections from Mohali.

In 2015 he became the first mayor of the Mohali Municipal Corporation with Congress support. He joined SAD in 2017 but was expelled for “anti-party activities” after he unsuccessfully contested the 2021 civic polls as an independent.

Kulwant’s Janta Land Promoters Limited is developing two projects in Mohali.

In January 2023, a team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized at least 66 liquor vends in the city in which drug lord Akshay Chhabra had 25 percent share.

The NCB had on November 15, 2022 conducted a raid in Ludhiana, in which the bureau had recovered over 20kg heroin worth over Rs 175 crore. Chhabra was held in this case and the NCB had stated that he had shares in three liquor groups in Ludhiana in the current excise fiscal (2022-23), and claimed that “drug money” was being invested in the stock, security and licences of these liquor vends.

NCB had said that Chhabra had a stake of 25 percent in three liquor companies – including Fortis Group, Dholewal Group and Gill Chowk Group in the current excise fiscal.

ED officials confirmed that today’s questioning of AAP MLA was linked to Akshay Chhabra.
