Not many people living in Chandigarh know that an easy,hassle-free method of paying their Traffic Violation Information Slip (TVIS) challans exists – a cheque drop-box facility installed at the sector-17 police post, near Neelam Cinema, that can be used 24×7.

According to sources, around 6000-7000 TVIS challans are issued every month out of which only 25-30 are paid through cheques. A vast majority prefers to pay its challan fine at the sector-29 Traffic Police lines, which is cumbersome and time consuming. “It’s mentioned in the notice as well as the violation slip that the fine can be paid through a cheque. But people do not read the notice properly. Panic-stricken people rush to the Traffic Police lines to pay the fine in haste,” a challaning branch official said.

The cheques dropped in the box are collected by the authorities once a week. TVIS are the traffic violation slips which are specifically used for the offenses either recorded by CCTV cameras or by pasting a slip on a vehicle for wrong parking. Besides the drop-box and paying in person, traffic defaulters can also pay their fines online.
