Driving licences will soon mention one’s wish to donate organs after their death.
Lending its support to the cause of organ donation,the UT Traffic Police has sent a proposal in this regard to the Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh for approval. Once approved,a column will be included in the form for driving licences,asking the applicant to tick the option if he wishes to donate his organs. This was announced by DSP (Traffic) Vijay Kumar,during the Public Forum : Organ Transplantation held at PGI,on Saturday,by the department of Hepaetology to create awareness about organ donation.
Individuals should only be allowed to get new driving licence unless they answer a question about whether they want to donate their organs after their death, he added.
The World Health Organization (WHO) in its first-ever Global Status Report on Road Safety in 2010 had revealed that India registered over 1,30,000 roadside deaths annually and now has the worst road traffic accident rate worldwide. There were 14 deaths per hour in 2009 as opposed to 13 in 2008 according to latest reports by National Crime Records Bureau.
During the event,31-year-old Upasna,the second patient to undergo liver transplantation last year was present on the occasion with her husband and mother.
She inspired everyone to donate organs, I am now absolutely fine as somebodys family members decided to donate the deceaseds liver to me. One can actually gift someone a new life by donating organs and we should all do it.
