Salesman Ramlal is the tragedy of a common man
There is no slot that you can place Salesman Ramlal into. An adaptation of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman by Imteyaz Hussien and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, the play staged as part of the ongoing Winter Theatre Festival is the story of our lives, the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, smiles and sorrows.
Miller’s play won both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for drama,”it’s a play that’s a reflection of the times we’re living in,the American culture of buying and selling, replacing humans with machines. We can see the affects on our life, more so now than ever before,” theatre actor Kishore Kadam describes the play close to life, irrespective of geographical boundaries, one that made Miller a household name all over the world. “Imteyaz has adapted it flawlessly and we’ve been playing Salesman Ramlal since 2000,taking a little break and reviving the play again. And just because I’m in the play,it doesn’t mean it’s a comedy,” Satish Kaushik plays the central character,Salesman Ramlal along with Seema Biswas. Describing the role as one of the most challenging and closest to his heart,it’s the tragedy of a common man,an old salesman who is no longer able to earn a living and one who spends most of his time dreaming instead of doing anything to improve his life. “He’s a failure in life,he loves to dream, his dreams are real, but he creates an unreal world around him. It’s poignant, has humour, pathos. As opposed to the thought that tragedy can only be of a big man, this play is about the fact that a common man’s tragedy is as big. And it’s such a privilege to play a role that Dustin Hoffman played and I am proud of my interpretation,” Satish says movies put you in a bracket, but theatre has no limitations. “It’s real and you can reinterpret any role,” Satish comes back to the stage of Tagore after 35 long years, having done his first professional play Kesro here. “It’s a great day for me,I am reliving all the days here after I passed out from NSD,the paranthas near the bus stand,University hostel,it’s a homecoming for me and like the play, the play is special,” Satish takes the centrestage.
