Focus on AI, says new GNDU Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh
With 38 years of teaching experience, Dr. Karamjit Singh now takes charge of GNDU, which boasts two regional campus colleges, 11 constituent colleges, and 169 affiliated institutions.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, on the recommendation of the state government, has appointed Dr. Karamjit Singh as the new Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU).
Dr. Karamjit Singh assumed office upon his arrival at the university on Tuesday.
Previously, he was the founding Vice-Chancellor of Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala, a position he held since September 3, 2020. With 38 years of teaching experience, Dr. Karamjit Singh now takes charge of GNDU, which boasts two regional campus colleges, 11 constituent colleges, and 169 affiliated institutions.
He also served as Registrar at Panjab University, Chandigarh, from September 30, 2018, to September 2, 2020.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Dr. Karamjit Singh said, “GNDU is already performing well. We are the number one university in India in terms of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). My priority is to ensure the university makes a global impact.”
Highlighting his focus areas, he added, “This is the era of artificial intelligence. We have excellent faculty here, and I want to prioritise skill-based courses. We also plan to extend education to villages through online platforms. As a teacher myself, I aim to empower educators and align teaching to meet students’ needs.”
On the importance of AI and skill development, he said, “The future lies in AI and skill-based education. We want to introduce new courses and emphasise value addition to enhance their relevance.”
When asked about vacant seats at GNDU, he remarked, “I’ve just joined and need to assess the situation. I’ll rely on inputs from the faculty to make informed decisions.”
