A dismissed constable of the Chandigarh Police,Dilbagh Singh,who was living in Sector 20,Panchkula,was arrested in Mohali on Monday. He later confessed to committing at least four robberies of over Rs 17 lakh in Mohali during the recent past,Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said.
Bhullar said the accused was arrested at a police check-post near old barrier in Phase I here on the identification of a resident of Barmajra village near Mohali Jaspal Singh.
An unsuccessful bid was made to break open Jaspals car in Phase V market here on December 12 when he had gone to buy sweets and Rs 50,000 cash was lying in his parked car.
As he came out of the sweet shop,Jaspal saw two persons trying to break open his vehicle. He raised the alarm,following which both the miscreants fled the spot but the accused left behind his driving license,said the SSP.
With the help of the recovered driving licence,one of the runaway miscreants was identified and since then,the local police were on a lookout for him.
After Jaspal,who accompanied the police party,identified
Dilbagh,the police party caught hold of him and during preliminary interrogation,he confessed to be part of December 12 unsuccessful strike besides committing several other robberies and thefts in this area,claimed Bhullar.
He added that Dilbagh was put under sustained interrogation to ascertain his accomplices and solve other incidents of robberies and thefts,in which he was involved. A local court remanded the accused to two-day police remand.
