Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, who owes Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi his first chief ministerial stint in 1998,will head for Ahmedabad on Saturday to felicitate Modi on his birthday.

As party in-charge of Himachal Pradesh in 1998,Modi has played a crucial role in striking a deal with former minister Sukh Ram to form a coalition government in the state. Despite a section of BJP MLAs and ministers not liking Modi’s style of functioning,Dhumal’s emergence as a leader in the state has much to do with Modi’s political craftmenship.

Dhumal, who left for Delhi on Thursday evening by road,as his helicopter could not fly due to bad weather, has always spoken highly of Modi. He had also frequently sent his ministers and top government officials to study Gujarat’s model of development and good governance.

In the last two months, two ministers — Rajeev Bindal (Health) and Narinder Bragta (Horticulture) have visited Gujarat. The government has also signed a few agreements with the Gujarat government to avail its expertise in certain services, including the use of new technologies and e-governance.

“Narendra bhai Modi has given a strong leadership to Gujarat. Several ambitious schemes being implemented in Gujarat were being replicated in other states, including Himachal Pradesh. We have a close coordination with the Gujarat government and have already adopted some of its best practices,” said Dhumal.

During the last Lok Sabha elections,Modi had campaigned actively for Anurag Thakur, the Hamirpur MP and the chief minister’s son.
