As the match went into the third set,the fatigue was clearly visible on Pradeep Reddy’s face. The player from Andhra Pradesh had been kept on his feet throughout the match by Dhruv Aggarwal. Determined to overcome the fatigue,Pradeep kept marching on but soon he suffered cramps and he had no other choice but to give up the fight. However,he had put up a brave fight before conceding in the latter stages of the final as the CLTA lad Dhruv claimed the boys’ Under-18 title with a 6-4,6-7(8) 5-4 (conceded) win in the AITA Talent Series at CLTA Complex,Sector 10,on Friday.
With the weather playing perfect foil, the final match started on a bright note for the Chandigarh lad as he claimed the first set 6-4. In the next set,he faced a good resistance from Pradeep and the match went into tie-breaker but the Andhra player kept his cool and secured the set 7-6 (8).
Pradeep’s style of play did trouble Dhruv in the initial stages but he gained in confidence with each succeeding points. Dhruv kept the pressure on rushing the net and winning the crucial points. Having broken Pradeep in the ninth game of the final set,Dhruv who was serving for the match, squandered three easy match points-a two sitter balls at the net and one easy forehand.
The ninth game lasted about twenty minutes with eight deuces. Eventually,Pradeep collapsed to ground with cramps and finally conceded the match.
Meanwhile,CHART trainee Sachin Kumar made short work of second seed Gagan Sharma of Rajasthan in straight sets by 6-3,6-3 to win the boys’ Under 14 singles title.
The match was well contested by both players but Sachin looked the superior one. Hitting winners off both flanks and following his powerful groundstrokes to the net,Gagan was caught off guard many times during the match.
In the girls’ Under-14 singles,CLTA trainee Bhavya Wadhawan got the better of Delhi’s Simran Wadha to annex the title. Bhavya was leading 7-5,6-5 when Simran conceded the match. The match saw many long rallies but Simran made some unforced errors at crucial points to lose the plot. On the other hand,Bhavya’s powerful forehand served her well in both sets.
Meanwhile,Jaspreet Kaur took the girls’ Under-18 title after defeating Seeulee Upadhyaya of Orissa 6-7,3-6,6-3 in an exciting final. The match swung to and fro as both the players looked determined to claim the title but Jaspreet played well in the latter stages to lay her hands on the title.
