The condition of the burial ground for children continues to be pitiable despite the proposals made by the Municipal Corporation over a period of time. There is no fencing or a boundary wall, due to which there is free access to the burial ground.
The recent incident in which a half burnt body of an infant was found, highlighted the apathy of the authorities towards the condition of the ground. The infant had been buried on Monday by the parents. However, when they went on Tuesday to perform some rituals, they found the grave dug up and the half burnt body of their child at the burial ground.
Proposals have often been mooted by the civic body to improve the situation of the burial ground. However,no work was undertaken. There have been instances in the past when stray animals entered the burial ground and dug up the graves of the children. The bodies are now buried a few feet deeper. Area councillor Subhash Chawla said that he has discussed the issue with the Mayor and steps will be taken soon. There is a need to construct a boundary wall as the burial ground is open from three sides and is very isolated. Keeping in view Tuesdays incident,a security guard needs to be hired. The burial ground is surrounded by forest land and permission will be required from the Administration for constructing the boundary wall, he said.
There had been complaints earlier by parents who went to bury their children, about the growth of weeds in the burial ground. Due to this it was difficult for them to enter the area. Also there had been instances when while digging a grave,an older grave was disturbed.
