Dengue fever continues to raise its ugly head in the city with 120 cases reported so far in the season at government hospitals across the city.

Dengue fever continues to raise its ugly head in the city with 120 cases reported so far in the season at government hospitals across the city. Out of these cases,75 are patients who are local residents while remaining cases are from other cities. However,there are an equal number of cases which are being treated at various local hospitals and clinics in the city.

According to experts,children and the elderly are more vulnerable to dengue as they have weak immunity and thus the educational institutions must spread awareness and identify areas where water collects,which must be removed to prevent breeding of dengue mosquitoes, said a senior doctor from the UT health department.

Dengue used to occur after 2-3 years of gap. Now it has become seasonal and widespread with rise in urbanization and more and more people travelling to different places frequently,he added.

In some people depending on immunity,dengue is moderate and goes away on its own after a few days of fever.

The measures being taken by the UT health department include deployment of teams for additional surveillance work,distribution of handbills/pamphlets for creating awareness,fogging operation in affected areas and special drive for checking of coolers in government offices.

The preventions recommended for general public are to avoid close contact with people who are having respiratory illness,cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief when coughing or sneezing,washing hands often with soap or alcohol based hand wash will help protect from germs,staying at home,away from work,school,and public places when you are sick.
