Following the registration of a case against an Akali worker for allegedly manhandling a girl during a party rally on Monday, the SAD-BSP joint candidate, Dr Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, Tuesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of using the SC/SC Act to browbeat political opponents.

A case was registered Monday night against the Akali worker following a protest by the villagers and mazdoor unions. The case was registered under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with an intention to outrage her modesty), 323 (causing hurt), 34 (criminal act with common intention), 506 (Criminal Intimidation) of IPC and Section 3 and 4 of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989.

In a statement , Dr Sukhi said a fake case has been been registered against the Akali worker and three others pertaining to the incident, which occurred on May 7 at Dayalpura village in Kartarpur assembly constituency of Jalandhar during the course of which the security of former minister Bikram Singh Majithia had been breached. He said even though five unidentified persons, including three women with muffled faces, had tried to block the path of Majithia’s car with the intention of causing him harm, the Punjab Police police had acted against the Akali worker and three others and accused them of outraging the modesty of the women. “This is a clear case of government high handedness”.

Asserting that the AAP government had got baffled as it stared at imminent defeat in the Jalandhar parliamentary by-poll, Dr Sukhi said “now it is using underhand means to influence the voters at the last minute”. He said such tactics would not succeed as the electorate understood that Majithia or the SAD was in no position to address the grievances of the protesters who ironically approached an opposition leader and even heckled him instead of approaching the AAP candidate or government officials. There seems to be more than which meets the eye in this ‘protest’. An impartial inquiry alone can reveal the truth in the case. I appeal that a judicial inquiry be ordered into the entire incident pending which all action in the case be kept pending,” Dr Sukhi added.

He also disclosed that no action had been taken in the complaint filed by Majithia’s security incharge regarding the breach of security of the former minister when he was scheduled to leave the public meeting.
