Dasuya bypoll: BJP meet today to decide candidate

The state BJP is likely to take a call on its candidate for the July 11 Dasuya Assembly bypoll on Friday

The state BJP is likely to take a call on its candidate for the July 11 Dasuya Assembly bypoll on Friday. The party is reportedly keen on giving the ticket to a family member of deceased MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Amarjit Singh Sahi. A meeting in this regard will held on Monday at a core party meet called by state president Ashwani Sharma in Chandigarh.

According to sources,Sahi’s sudden death on June 3 following a cardiac arrest, has resulted in a sympathy wave for his family. Therefore, taking no chances, the BJP is likely to recommend the name of Sahi’s wife Sukhjeet Kaur or son Dr Harsimrat Singh Sahi. This comes in the wake of two former cabinet ministers,Tikshan Sud and Arunesh Shaker, lobbying for the ticket.

Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna, who was instrumental in bringing Sahi into the BJP fold,is learnt to be pushing family’s case with the party high command.

Sahi had defeated the Congress’ Ramesh Chander Dogra in the 2007 and 2012 polls. The buzz is that owing to ill-health,Dogra — who had represented Dasuya for four terms — will seek the ticket for his son.

Sanjha Morcha to contest bypoll

CHANDIGARH: The Sanjha Morcha would contest the Dasuya Assembly by-election scheduled for July 11. The seat fell vacant following the demise of sitting BJP MLA from Dasuya Amarjit Singh Sahi on June 3 following a heart attack. “The name of the candidate shall be announced in a few days,” People’s Party of Punjab president Manpreet Singh Badal said after a meeting of the Morcha.
