Dallewal’s hunger strike: Capt Amarinder meets Amit Shah a day after mega rally at Khanauri
The meeting comes amidst the growing demand for Centre to open a dialogue with Dallewal.

Amid growing dissent among farmers regarding the hunger strike by Jagjit Singh Dallewal, convenor of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political), senior BJP leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In a late-night post on X, Amarinder shared pictures of his meeting with Shah, stating, “Met with Hon’ble Home Minister Amit Shah ji and discussed various current issues of Punjab.” Amarinder could not be reached for further details about the meeting, but several comments on his post expressed hope for a resolution to the farmers’ issues.
Notably, on February 19 last year, shortly after farmers began camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, Amarinder met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Accompanied by his daughter and Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur, he had discussed a range of issues concerning Punjab, including farmers’ grievances. At the time, Amarinder expressed confidence that the issues would be resolved soon.
However, just two days after his meeting with the PM, on February 21, 2024, farmer Shubhkaran Singh was killed at the Khanauri border during a clash as farmers attempted to march toward the Haryana border. Tear gas shells and rubber bullets were fired from the Haryana side.
Farmers have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13 last year. The last communication between farmer union leaders and the central government occurred on February 18, 2024.
As Dallewal’s hunger strike entered its 41st day on Sunday, Amarinder’s meeting with the Home Minister gains significance, given the farmers’ demands for the Centre to resume talks.
During the 2020-2021 agitation against the farm laws, Amarinder played a key role as a mediator between farmers and the union government, holding several meetings with farmer union leaders in Punjab. The farm laws were eventually repealed on November 19, 2021. Later, Amarinder’s newly floated party, the Punjab Lok Congress, contested the 2022 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP.
