D-Day: Fate of 21 student leaders to be decided today

The fate of 21 candidates, including nine for the post of president of Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC)-2023, in the election fray will be decided on Wednesday.
At least 15,963 Panjab University (PU) students will cast their votes at 179 polling booths. The polling will start at 9.30 am. The counting will start at 12 noon at Gymnasium Hall in PU.
Meanwhile, 1,200 police personnel, including eight DSPs, 12 SHOs, eight inspectors and others, have been deputed for election duty on the PU campus and other 10 PU-affiliated colleges, which will also go to polling.
Nine presidential candidates are Davinder Pal Singh of PUSU, Divyansh Thakur of CYSS, Jatinder Singh of NSUI, Kuldeep Singh of HSA, Manika Chabra of PSUL, Prateek Kumar of SFS, Rakesh Deshwal of ABVP, Yuvraj Garg of SOI and Saksham Singh, an independent candidate.
The campus students who have taken admission in the university department till September 5 are entitled to cast their votes for the PUCSC polls. Students who haven’t been issued Identity Cards can enter the campus by showing the fee slip of the current session along with any ID proof.
SSP (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur said, “A three-part strategy was made for the PU and colleges’ elections – pre-election arrangements, arrangements for the day of election, and post-election arrangements.”
As many as 112 candidates are in the fray in 10 affiliated colleges of PU in Chandigarh. Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGSC), Sector 26, has the maximum candidates for the four posts, including four for the post of president, four for the post of vice-president, four for the post of general secretary and six for the post of joint secretary. Post Graduate Government College for Girls (PGGCG), Sector 11, has the least six candidates for the four posts.
Sources said that crime branch personnel have been deputed for law and order duty on the PU campus. The sensitive colleges, including DAV, Sector 10, SD College, Sector 32, SGGSC, Sector 26, will remain under the police radar even after the elections. The results of polling in the colleges will be declared before 2 pm.
