Cops pick up Fazilka Independent

An independent candidate from Fazilka district of Punjab was arrested Thursday evening by the Chandigarh police for his alleged involvement in an attempt to kidnap a former sarpanch.

An independent candidate from Fazilka district of Punjab was arrested Thursday evening by the Chandigarh police for his alleged involvement in an attempt to kidnap a former sarpanch. The candidate,Jaswinder Singh alias Rocky,already has six other criminal cases pending against him. A case has been registered against all 13 for attempt to kidnap,criminal intimidation,rioting and violation of the Arms Act.

Rajinder Singh,a former sarpanch of Jamal Kee village and an active BJP worker alleged in his complaint to the police on January 24 this year that Rocky,along with 12 others,tried to kidnap him at gunpoint. Rocky has been seen at a number of BSP rallies in Uttar Pradesh and is believed to be a close associate of Mayawati. Manohar Mujadia,one of the other 12 who were also allegedly involved in the kidnap attempt,is the son of former MLA Manga Singh of Jalalabad.

Chandigarh police arrested Rocky in Chandigarh when he went there to attend the hearing for a murder case against him. After arresting him,they handed him over to the Fazilka police. He was produced by the police in the local court in Fazilka and the court has given him one day police remand, said Ashok Bath,Fazilka Senior Superintendent of Police.

Besides this case,Rocky has been booked in ten other cases,out of which he has been acquitted in four. Six cases,encompassing murder,violation of the Arms Act,attempt to murder,attempt for extortion,kidnapping,illegal confinement and criminal conspiracy,remain pending. In 2008,he was arrested by the the Special Crime Investigation Cell of the Chandigarh Police for allegedly planning the murder of notorious gangster Prabhjinder Singh Dimpy. A US-made .45 bore pistol with two magazines and seven live cartridges believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from him.
