Cop finds Rs 10 lakh in car at accident site,hands it over family of victim

The Mansa police are all praise for an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted in the district who set an example of honesty by handing over Rs 10 lakh to the family of a man who died in a road accident. ASI Jaswant Singh had found the cash in the victim’s car that collided head-on with a school bus near Matti village on December 9.

The deceased was Raj Kumar who was going to Ludhiana from Ratia (Haryana) when the accident occurred.

Raj Kumar,the police said,ran a saree shop in Ratia and had hired the car to bring sarees and other material from Ludhiana. The driver of the car and an elderly woman,who was the driver’s relative,had sustained serious injuries in the accident,the police said,adding that the woman died in a Ludhiana hospital on Saturday.

“I had reached the accident spot within 10 minutes after receiving the news. Had I been late,anyone could have taken away the money. I handed over the money to Raj’s family members as soon as they arrived,” said 57-year-old Jaswant. Originally from Jheeda village in Bathinda district,Jaswant will retire in April 2011. He had Punjab Police in 1974 as a constable.

“I am writing to the director general of police,requesting a commendation certificate for Jaswant Singh. His act of honesty has made the Punjab Police proud,” said Mansa SSP Hardial Singh Mann.
