Cool comforts at zoo- ice, fruits and Glucon-D

Papaya, spinach and cucumber are fed to birds and animals. Glucon-D is mixed in the drinking water of the animals. Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, a block officer at the zoo said, “Apart from the environmental and dietary enrichment, we ensure that the indoor shelters of the animals are open throughout the day. It is upto
the animals if they want to wander outside the enclosure or remain indoors.”

The zoo has taken several other measures like installing desert coolers and fans in the night shelters of lions, tigers, bears and other feline and canine animals. All the windows of the enclosures have been fitted with meshes to guard against mosquitoes.

Agro-nets with 75 per cent density have been erected on bamboo sticks inside the outdoor enclosures of the animals to provide shade and protect against direct sunlight. Huts of Saccharum Munja (wild grass) have been made inside the enclosures of deers. The pools inside the enclosures of Manipur deers, swamp deers and elephants are filled with muddy water to assuage the animals. Another attraction is the sprinkler showers that make the animals come out and play and entertain zoo visitors.
