A mother and her 22-year-old daughter died in a road accident in Mohali on Wednesday. The accident took place near the Mauli Baidwan lightpoint,intersection of Sectors 79 and 80 around 1.30 pm.
Daughter of Punjab police constable Gurnam Singh,Amanpreet Kaur,was riding pillion with her mother Nirmal Kaur (43) on their two wheeler. The two were crossing the light point when the driver of a truck,approaching from Sohana,lost control of his vehicle.
In a bid to save the mother-daughter,the driver jammed the brakes,as a result of which the truck swung sideways and fell on the two. While the mother was crushed under the truck,the daughter fell on the road and sustained serious head injuries. The mother got buried under the tar,which the truck was carrying. Both mother and daughter reportedly died on the spot.
According to eyewitnesses,while applying brakes the truck driver lost control,as he was over speeding. The bodies were later taken to the civil hospital in Phase 6. The deceased were residents of Phase 11.
The driver was caught on the spot and taken to Suhana Police Station. An FIR under Section 304 of the IPC (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was lodged against Davinder Singh,on the statement of an eyewitness.
Police said that Nirmal Kaur had to be pulled out with the help of a crane as she was buried under tar.
Lightpoint a killer stretch
The Mauli Baidwan light point has turned out to be a killer intersection. The incident that took place on Wednesday was the second accident,in the last one week.
On Monday,four men were killed at the same light point in a truck collision.
