All does not seem to be well between the Mayor H C Kalyan and a section of Congress councillors. Voices of dissent have been raised by some councillors over the functioning of the mayor.
The seeds of discord were sown before the mayoral elections held earlier. There was intense lobbying for being named the candidate for the mayor’s post. The councillors were divided, with a section supporting Kalyan and a few supporting Satish Kainth. Even after Kalyan’s name was announced, the resentment still continued.
On Monday, as the mayor conducted checks at paid parking lots, Kainth expressed opposition to not being called when Kalyan was in his ward. Kainth has decided to take up the issue with the party president B B Bahl and former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal.
Kalyan meanwhile says, “It is the discretion of the mayor whether the area councillor has to be called during inspection or not. I will continue doing my work. There are councillors who are happy that I visited their wards. If some councillors do not like it they should meet the party president.”
Kainth along with another Congress councillor Darshan Garg had held protest in front of the office of the MC chief engineer against work not getting done in their wards. The incident had also disrupted two meetings of the general house.
A few days after this, the mayor held a conference highlighting his achievements. There he lavished praise on the officers. This did not go down well with the councillors who objected to this.
The six months that have passed have been fairly lacklustre, with code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections being in place for more than two months.
