Gurpreet Singh Gabi was elected the president of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress in the elections held on Thursday. He defeated his nearest rival Govind Khattar by a margin of 23 votes. Five other office bearers were also elected.
The elections are part of the initiative of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to promote democracy in the party at the grassroots. The process for elections was initiated a few weeks ago,which began with the membership drive. The elections for delegates were held between July 15 and 17.
A large number of youth Congress members converged at the Law Bhawan in Sector 37 for todays elections. The 16 candidates in fray were given time to express their views on issues of their choice. This was followed by casting of votes by the delegates.
As many as 201 votes were polled. Gabi with 79 votes was named the president of CTYC. Govind Khattar was named the vice-president. He polled 56 votes.
Five general secretaries have been elected. These include Dharmender,Harmail Kesri,Jatinder Kumar,Pooja and Maninder Dhillon. Pooja is the daughter of deputy Mayor Sheila Devi. Two seats,including one reserved for a woman candidate in the general category and one for the OBC,could not be filled. The decision about these seats would be taken by the party high command.
Majority of those elected belong to the H S Lucky group. Lucky had been the president of CTYC for the last nine years.
Pradesh Returning Officer Anirudh Singh,national president of Indian Youth Congress Rajiv Satav and IYC election commission member Shatir Sanadi were the observors.
Anirudh said the process of elections ensures that a leader who is liked by the people at the grassroots is elected. The office bearers who have been elected have the mandate of the members of Youth Congress. A month long training programme would be organised for the office bearers.
