Even as the first community parking lot being constructed by the Municipal Corporation (MC) remains incomplete, the proposals for such parking lots in other sectors are yet to receive approval. Meanwhile, parking woes in the residential areas continue, with vehicles parked along roads. The councillors who have mooted proposals for construction of community parking in their wards are awaiting approval.
The need for community parking lots in the sectors was needed, keeping in view the increasing number of vehicles in the city. The problem is especially acute in the multilevel houses where families residing on every floor have at least one or more vehicles. With lack of space to park within the premises, vehicles are often parked on the roads.
The MC had mooted the proposal of having community parking lots in sectors with the pilot project in Sector-19. The community parking lot in the sector was approved in 2009,but,is yet to be completed. The area has now been levelled and is awaiting carpeting.
Councillor,Anju Beniwala said: The parking lot in Sector-19,once completed, would make space for around 80 cars to be parked. It will be a relief for the residents. Lights have been provided in the parking lot to ensure safety of the vehicles. We are hopeful that by next month the parking lot will be inaugurated.
Councillor Harjinder Kaur said that she had mooted a proposal for a community parking lot in Sector-44 where MIG and HIG flats are present. There is a lack of space for the residents to park their vehicles. I had moved a proposal for construction of a community parking lot, however,I have yet to receive a reply, she said.
Earlier also, the sites for the community parking lots have been rejected by the UT Administration. The councillors had proposed that these parking lots be provided in villages as well where there is an acute shortage of space.
In absence of community parking lots, parks are used by the residents as parking lots. At times the number of vehicles parked on both sides of the roads are so high that it leaves less space for emergency vehicles to pass. Paver blocks are now being installed around parks to make space for parking.
There is a need for community parking lots in many sectors. After the pilot project in Sector-19 is complete,we will know of any difficulties that can arise. These can be taken care of before the project is replicated in other sectors. With the number of vehicles growing at such a fast pace,a time will come when people will have to show proof that they have a space to park vehicles before being allowed to buy a car, said councillor Anu Chatrath.
