As cold wave continues, Punjab records -0.2 degree temperature, Haryana close to 0

The weather is likely to be dry in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with no major change in minimum temperatures expected in the next 48 hours, as per the IMD.

For the first time in Punjab in this winter season, the temperature went below zero degree Celsius on Monday morning. It was -0.2 degree Celsius in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar at 8.30 am, while the temperature there on Sunday morning was zero degree.

Haryana also shivered at close to zero degree Celsius as the minimum temperature was 0.4 degree in the morning in Mahendragarh, where it was 2 degrees at 8.30 am on Sunday, as per a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department.

The IMD has also said the red alert is likely to remain in place for most parts of Punjab on Tuesday, with dense fog and a cold day expected. In Haryana, the red alert will continue in nine districts—Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Sonipat, Panipat, Jind, Sirsa, Fatehabad and Yamunanagar—and an orange alert has been sounded for the rest of the state.

On Monday, the minimum temperature in Punjab fluctuated below 5 degrees Celsius in all the cities except Amritsar and Faridkot, where it was 6.5 degrees and 5.7 degrees, respectively. Ludhiana shivered at 1 degree Celsius on Monday morning, while Bathinda had a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees, followed by Ropar (2.4 degrees) and Gurdaspur (3.1 degrees).

The minimum temperature in the whole of Haryana was below 5 degrees Celsius. In Rewari it was as low as 1.6 degrees, followed by Hisar (1.9 degrees) and Gurugram (2 degrees).

As per the IMD forecast, weather is likely to be dry in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and there will be no major change in minimum temperatures in the next 48 hours. The temperature could rise by 2 degrees Celsius thereafter in the region. Till January 19, the average minimum temperature in the region is likely to be up to 8 degrees and the average maximum temperature up to 18 degrees.

Dense fog is likely to continue in the region in the coming three or four days, according to the IMD.
