The character Mrs Malaprop had a penchant for using similar sounding but incorrect words to express what she had in her mind.

Malapropic slips
The character Mrs Malaprop had a penchant for using similar sounding but incorrect words to express what she had in her mind. This led to addition of a new word in the English lexicon. An example of malapropism came to the fore recently, when a Haryana Congress spokesperson dispatched a press release to various scribes wherein he had described state Congress president Phool Chand Mullana as Fool Chand Mullana. A smart alec remarked that it actually wasn’t a malapropism but a Freudian slip, where in the person unintentionally ends up saying something which is in his subconscious mind. Clearly, with statements like that a temple be constructed for him,Mr Mullana who even lost his Vidhan Sabha seat hasn’t exactly endeared himself to people or his party workers.

Golden hands
It is debatable whether the various antics of social activist and lawyer Arvind Thakur have led to any tangible benefit in the lives of Chandigarh’s resident, but the man certainly knows how to remain in news. Recently,Thakur was seen wearing a whole array of expensive looking bracelets and rings in his hand. Seeing his ornamented hand, one of his acquaintances standing close to him, quipped loudly- “Yeh haath humko dede thakur”. Everyone in the gathering burst into peals of laughter at this perfect use of one of Hindi cinema’s most famous dialogues.

‘Raise slogans in chorus’
To express their anger against the alleged assault of a clerk by an advocate, the clerks (munshis) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association gathered outside the court to raise slogans. No doubt they were raising slogans at the top of their voice but one thing was missing-chorus. Failing to raise slogans in sync, the clerks were shouting one after the other. “Oh yaar please chorus mein bolo” (please raise slogans in chorus),said the angry head of the clerks’ association.

Politically correct
Punjab Congress chief Mohinder Singh Kaypee was, perhaps, the last one to welcome the triumph of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh following his relief from the Apex court. He’s not too pleased with the manner in which his team took so much time to release his statement a day later in support of Amarinder Singh. The state party chief last week expressed his displeasure on the issue to certain office-bearers of the Punjab Congress. All what Kaypee intended was to be politically correct. That his equation with Capt Amarinder Singh is far from cordial is the party’s worst kept secret.

Official encroachment
CITCO’s blatant encroachment on a plot adjacent to Hotel Shivalikview in Sector 17 is a perfect example of how the government departments don’t bother about the law or rules. For decades,Hotel Shvialikview is renting out the encroached land and parking for functions, parties, events and charging money for the same. Rather than taking action on CITCO,the top brass of the UT Administration has not moved an inch and rather instructed CITCO officials to sort out the issue. Even after admitting that CITCO has encroached upon the adjacent plot,UT Adviser Pradip Mehra did not instruct CITCO to vacate the encroachment, rather asked his men to sort out the issue with the municipal councillors, who unearthed the issue.
