CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) has extended the last date for submission of applications for the 93 posts of Assistant Professors in various departments at the university. The candidates can now apply till December 24.

The varsity has sought applications for 69 posts from the general category,18 posts from the Scheduled Caste and 6 from the physically challenged persons in different departments and institutes as per the reserved quota.

The details of the advertisement,consisting of subject-wise break up of posts,qualifications,reservation,application forms and detailed instructions,are available on the varsity’s website.

Gian Jyoti holds 6th HR summit at CII

CHANDIGARH: The sixth HR Summit,2013 on ‘Skilled Human Capital: A catalyst for 21st century’ was organised by the Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJ-IMT),Mohali,at CII in Sector 31 on Friday. Companies and educational institutes participated in the national-level summit,where S Bhullar of Anand Automative Ltd was the keynote speaker.

The programme started with a welcome address by J S Bedi,chairman of Gian Jyoti Group of Institutions.

The summit had two technical sessions where the first session had three speakers that included Divya Rajput,head of the Indian Institute of Corporation Affairs,Sambit Ghosh,HR head at Destimoney Securities Pvt Ltd and Kamna Raj Aggarwal,chairperson of Punjab State Council,CII.

The second technical session titled ‘Experiential Perspectives’ was chaired by Vishal Moudgil from Accenture Services India.

The GJIMT HR Excellence Award for the year 2013 was awarded to Buland Iqbal Singh,Head of Corporate HR at KDDL Limited.

SPIC MACAY organises classical music event

CHANDIGARH: A classical music event was organised by the Chandigarh chapter of SPIC MACAY at the PEC University of Technology on Friday. Popular artistes Shree Kushal Das on the sitar and Durjay Bhaumi on the tabla,who are also Grade A musicians at the All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan,performed in the evening. Professor K K Gogna,Professor Deena Nath and other faculty members were also present at the event.

SPIC MACAY,a voluntary youth movement,promotes Indian classical music,dance and other aspects of Indian culture.

Walk against use of antibiotics to be held today

CHANDIGARH: The Emerging Anti-microbial Resistance Society (EARS),an NGO,is organising an awareness walk against the use of antibiotics on November 16.

To be flagged off by Justice N K Sanghi,a Punjab and Haryana High Court judge,the walk will start at 11 am from PGI till the Sector 17 Plaza. A street play and oath-taking ceremony on antibiotic awareness will follow the walk.

Talk on Diabetes Day held at ICSSR

CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) organised a talk in the ICSSR Complex to mark World Diabetes Day. Addressing the audience,Dr K P Singh,senior consultant (Endocrinology) at Fortis Hospital,Mohali,said that in the next 10 years,death due to diabetes will increase by 35 per cent.

Talking about prevention,he said the best way was to identify people predisposed to the disease.

“If your parents were diabetic,or if you are apple-shaped,chances of acquiring the disease go up. So start a lifelong exercise programme and good eating habits. This is the easiest and cheapest way to beat the disease,” he added.

Dr Singh said,“Insulin pump is the latest tool through which patients can manage diabetes. It gives a glucose reading every five minutes and the device is inserted in the abdominal area. It is easy to use and my patients who have got it continue with their normal activities,including walking,swimming and exercise.”

NGO celebrates Children’s Day at PGI

CHANDIGARH: Children’s Day was celebrated at PGIMER by volunteers from Nanhi Jaan,a project run for underprivileged children by NGO Veeranwali Foundation. Popular cartoon character Doraemon went around all the wards and OPD blocks at the Advanced Pediatric Center.

UIET organises first official MBA event

CHANDIGARH: ‘The Magestamo-Managers of Tomorrow,2013’ — the first official MBA event at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET),PU,was organised at the Indian Council of Social Science Research Hall (ICSSR) on Friday.

The team consisting of Anmol Verma and Ashutosh Dwivedi from UIET have been adjudged as the ‘Best Future Manager’ at the competition. A total of 50 teams from various institutes,including University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS),University Business School (UBS) and UIET participated in the competition.

The event began with an introductory speech on ‘Management Skill’ by Aditya Sharma,Director of Piccadily Hotels and Resorts and Gurdeep Singh,MBA co-ordinator of UIET.

The event was organised with an idea to prepare the students for the industry and make them realise what their future employers would demand from them.

UIET students win inter-college quiz at CCET

CHANDIGARH: An inter-college Information Security quiz competition was conducted as part of the Destination IT @ North conclave being organised by IT Departments of Chandigarh Administration,Punjab Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) at Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET) on Friday.

The quiz was conducted in association with the Institute of Information Security (IIS),the training arm of Network Intelligence India Pvt Ltd (NII) – a leading provider of information security services and solutions in India.

University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET),PU,were declared winners,while Anurag from UIET was awarded free training at the Institute of Information Security worth Rs 1 lakh and a placement offer at NII.

There was a tie for the 1st runners-up position between Vaibhav from Indo Global College and Varun from CCET. Both were awarded free training at Institute of Information Security worth Rs 1 lakh and internship at NII.

Chief guest Sameer Goel,member of the CII national committee on IT and e-Commerce and Delivery Manager at Infosys Ltd said,“To gain an extra edge,one needs to look beyond books and such kind of competitions are an excellent platform for this. The field of information security is one of the fastest growing fields and in the coming 10 years it is estimated to grow over 100 folds.”

Chandigarh airport to remain closed for two days

Chandigarh: No flights will take off or land from the Chandigarh airport from 10 am on November 23 to 7 am to November 25. This is due to the cold emulsion work being carried out on the 7,000-feet long Bitumen runway by the Indian Air Force.

All flights on these days have been suspended and passengers have been informed about the same. “The cancellation will definitely cause inconvenience to passengers,but we have informed them and will try to provide them all needed help,” said an employee of a private airlines.

According to a source from the Air Force,“The runaway is made of concrete and bitumen. The middle pathway,which is 7,000-ft long,is made of bitumen and the side pathways,which are 1,000-ft long,are made of concrete. Work will be done on the 7,000-ft runway over the two days.”

The officer added,“No aircraft activity will take place,as the emulsion will make the runaway slippery and it needs sufficient time to dry. However,helicopters can land.”

The manager of the Chandigarh Airport said details of flights canceled and rescheduled will be informed on Monday.

However,the Chandigarh-Delhi Air India flight will take off at 9:15 am on November 23. All other flights have been cancelled.

Street food vendor held for attempt to murder

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police,on Friday,arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly stabbing a vendor selling street food over placement of their stalls. The accused,identified as Lokesh,is a resident of New Indira Colony,Mani Majra.

According to police,the victim Vijay Chauhan (55) alleged that Lokesh,also a street vendor in IT park,used to verbally abuse him for putting up his stall near the accused’s own stall. When Chauhan responded to the verbal abuse,an altercation took place between the two. Upon this,the accused stabbed Chauhan thrice on Friday morning. Chauhan,who suffered injuries on his stomach and arm,was rushed to PGI.

Lokesh was arrested later in the afternoon from near his residence. A case of attempt to murder and of criminal intimidation under the IPC has been registered against the accused at Mani Majra police station.

Police register cross-FIR, all accused arrested

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police arrested five family members from Mauli Jagran complex and their neighbour in a cross FIR,one being of voluntarily causing hurt and another of outraging the modesty of a woman. The arrested have been identified as Ram Avtar,Ram Kishore,Jitender Kumar,Hemvati and Mohan Devi. Their neighbour has been identified as Parminder Singh. According to police,a 25-year-old girl from Mauli complex complained to her family that Parminder had outraged her modesty in the past and continued to do so. Upon this,the girl’s family went to Parminder’s house around 1 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday and beat him up with sticks. Parminder,who suffered head injuries,was later taken to a civil hospital in Mani Majra. Thereafter,Parminder filed a complaint against the girl’s family of voluntarily causing hurt,while the girl’s family filed a complaint against Parminder for outraging the modesty of a woman. All the accused have been arrested.

Soon,get ready for e-signatures

Chandigarh: A workshop on digital signature certificates was organised at the Entrepreneurship Development Centre,on Friday,as a run-up to the IT conclave — Destination IT@North.

Vivek Verma of NIC (National Informatics Centre) informed that very soon,25 of the 64 citizen-centric services,related to elections,food and civil supplies and engineering,would be launched where use of digital signatures would become essential.

Within the Administration,the initiatives involve launch of internal applications like e-office and a composite financial system for budgeting and financial transactions.

This would make it mandatory for all departments to use digital signatures in their operations in order to increase departmental efficiency and effectiveness.

Vikas Chaurasia from Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) informed that digital signatures were legally acceptable identity of any individual under the Income Tax Act,2000. Nearly 6 million licenses had been issued so far,he added.
