City architects win awards

The Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter of Indian Institute of Architects today received the Best Chapter Runners Up Award by the National President of IIA,Prafulla Karkhanis at a national conference in Hyderabad,according to a release here today.

The Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter of Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) today received the Best Chapter Runners Up Award by the National President of IIA,Prafulla Karkhanis at a national conference in Hyderabad,according to a release here today.

This is the third time the Chandigarh-Punjab chapter has made it to the awards,receiving Best Chapter Award in 2009 and runners-up award in 2010. The award was received by Surinder Bahga,Chairman of Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter along with his team members. The conference was attended by over 1,500 architects from all over the world.

The award is being given to Chapters and Centres of IIA every year on the basis of their performances in promoting the profession of architecture in India. At present,there are about 17 IIA chapters operating in India,in addition to 41 centres.

During the conference in Hyderabad today,three architects of the Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter – Manmohan Khanna,Yogesh Singla and Ashok Juneja – were also honoured for their exemplary services in the field.


Needy kids given sweaters

Chandigarh: Senior Citizens Welfare Association,Manimajra today organised a camp to distribute woollen sweaters to needy children at Mini Park in front of Modern Complex Market. The children were from the NGO ‘Theatre Age’. The founder head of the NGO,Zulfikar Khan speaking about the uniqueness of the NGO said that the 18-year-old organisation follows a unique concept of combining education with creative art. He said that children who do not go to school but do domestic and manual labour are identified by the NGO and admitted in regular schools. These children mostly from slum areas are given training in music and drama while they are doing regular studies. All expenses on fees,books and food are borne by the organisation till graduation level. The highlight of the function was a cultural programme presented by these children. Fifty children were presented sweets and sweaters by the members of the association.


Chemistry conf ends

CHANDIGARH: On the concluding day of International Conference on Innovations in Chemistry for Sustainable Development 2011,at Panjab University,the delegates expressed concerns over the rising energy consumption as by 2015,energy consumption will increase by 35%,with strongest growth in developing economies.
