Nature enthusiasts in Punjab have good news to cheer. The state’s Forest Department has recently launched the Chohal Eco Tourism Project (Nature Retreat Chohal) in the Hoshiarpur district which offers wildlife and forest experiences to visitors and at the same time promotes eco-tourism in the state.

Nature lovers can stay in huts built by the department, immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding natural environment, and the Chohal reservoir and experience the local culture and cuisines.

Visitors can also enjoy a jungle safari in a jeep and go boating in the nearby dams, which are being developed as eco-tourism destinations.

In addition to these attractions, the Forest Department has identified numerous tracks for trekking and off-roading enthusiasts.

“Over three dozen tracks have been developed for trekkers in Hoshiarpur, including family-friendly routes and off-roading tracks on Una road, Chitpurni Mata road, and Mehangrowal road. Engaging in such activities with family can bring a significant change to the lives of urban dwellers who often find themselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of city life,” said Dr Sanjeev Tiwari, Forest Conservator of the North Circle.

He added that similar projects are emerging in Hoshiarpur and Pathankot districts.

Hoshiarpur boasts of a large area of natural forests where you can spot wild animals like leopards, sambar deer, nilgai, barking deer, and birds such as peacocks.

What sets this project apart is the involvement of the local community, responsible for its operation and sharing of 50 per cent of the profits with the government.

The funds generated from this collaboration will be used for the development of villages around Chohal.

“Along with the Chohal project, two more projects have already surfaced in Pathankot and the Thana Dam area of Hoshiarpur. The Pathankot project follows the concept of Mini Goa and features Jungle Lodges near Thana Dam. Additionally, there is a jungle safari of approximately 15 km from Chohal to Takhni Wildlife Sanctuary,” Tiwari explained.

Tiwari said that Punjab holds immense potential for eco-tourism, providing residents with wonderful opportunities to explore captivating destinations within their own state.

Sunny Shergill, a nature enthusiast, termed it as a fantastic opportunity for the people of Punjab to enjoy their own state’s natural wonders. “Going trekking with family provides a valuable experience, instilling healthy, sporty habits in children who are increasingly immersed in social media and the virtual world. Sports and nature go hand in hand in nurturing a healthy and active youth for future generations,” he added.

The government must make people aware in a big way about these projects in the state, he emphasised.
