Weeks after the third counselling for Class XI admissions in government schools, seats are lying vacant even in the science stream. Teachers claim one of the reasons behind this is the change in school timings from 12.30 to 2 pm.
Medical and non-medical students are claiming it is difficult to take admission in government schools now with the new school timings being implemented for Class XI from the current session. The changed school timings have led the students to take dummy admissions this year.
Sukhraj Kaur,Vice Principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 16,said,Earlier,our science seats used to fill up by the second counselling with medical and non-medical students, with higher percentages, wishing to take admission in the top five government schools. Last year,we had students with CGPA 9-10,but this year, such students have opted to go for private schools or dummy admissions. This is done to manage their tuitions and coaching institutes after school hours.
We have displayed the list of students who have been granted admission. Now only the students, with low CGPA are left, who are in the waiting list in the science stream. The seats are likely to be filled by the end of the month, said subject expert,Sunil Bedi.
The admission process for Class XI will continue till August 29 until all vacant seats are filled, whereas,August 25 is the last day for submission of fees.
Meanwhile,a class XI government school teacher said,This is the first time when we are entertaining students with CGPA 8 in the science stream because students with higher CGPA took admissions in private schools, where the timings are till 12.30 pm. If the education department has changed the school timings for the government schools, then why not for the private schools? A economically-backward child cannot afford to take admission in a private school just because of the school timings. It becomes difficult for these students who have to cope up with the school attendance criteria and then their coaching institutes.
The DPI(Schools),Upkar Singh said,It was not our proposal to change the government school timings for the medical and non-medical students, but there were instructions from the CBSE office and we followed it.
I had submitted my fees to take admission in the GMSSS-19,but the changed timings for the science students were announced much later due to which I couldnt attend my coaching classes. So my parents suggested that I apply for dummy admission at Guru Nanak Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Sector 26, said Fatima Khan, who takes medical coaching from Aakash Institute.
