The CHANDIGARH Administration has decided to re-examine the “Tribune flyover” project. For, the proposed metro, as part of the CMP, is also passing through the same route.

The Tribune flyover is a project that has already faced multiple delays due to objections by people and the case is going on in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The revised estimates have been prepared for the Tribune flyover and a project cost of Rs 203 crore has been prepared which will be required to build the flyover in Ssector 29.

A senior officer of the Chandigarh Administration said, “We will be re-examining the project and accordingly the revised estimates. In fact, metro is also passing through the same route so we are consulting the RITES about the feasibility of the flyover.”

He added, “Once re-examined and if given the go-ahead, we will again send the revised proposal to ministry.”

Five years ago, the cost of the project was pegged at Rs 183 crore.

This year, the revised estimates were calculated and the cost jumped to Rs 203 crore due to the delay.

With present clarifications and the re-examination of the project, the project is set to face further delays.

Halted in 2019

It was in November 2019 that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed the project after a petition was filed. It was also said that several trees had to be cut for the Tribune Flyover project. In May this year, the stay was lifted.

Public hearing where people opposed

On the directions of the High Court, a public hearing was held if the city required a flyover.

Many turned up stating that they didn’t want Chandigarh s original character to be damaged and the city didn’t want a flyover.

While some had said that densely populated cities in Europe and Southeast Asia are beginning to destroy flyovers due to their damaging effects, then MP Kirron Kher had advocated the project.

As per the administration, the flyover was the only solution to the traffic mess at Tribune Chowk.

Over 1.43 lakh vehicles, including 1.35 lakh passenger car units (PCUs) cross Tribune Chowk — the rotary on the intersection of Dakshin Marg and Purva Marg — on a daily basis, as per traffic estimate.

First flyover project

Initially, the Chandigarh administration had planned a 7-kilometre stretch for the flyover. However, the Centre had approved 3.5 km length which was further pruned to 1.6 km by the MorTH.

As per the proposed plan, it shall go up to the railway overbridge on Dakshin Marg after passing over the Tribune Chowk.
