Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Tourism, chaired the meeting with the Department of Tourism and the Department of Cultural Affairs, to discuss and implement measures aimed at improving the functioning of these departments and promoting tourism in Chandigarh.
During the meetings, Brar emphasised the need for streamlined operations within the departments and outlined several key initiatives designed to enhance the city’s tourism infrastructure and appeal.
One of the significant points of focus was improving Chandigarh’s tourism facilities and engaging with citizens for their feedback on promoting tourism.
Brar recommended exploring the introduction of a day pass system for visitors to Chandigarh, aimed at enhancing visitor experience and encouraging longer stays in the city.
“It was also discussed to open souvenir shops at different locations in Chandigarh. Further, it was also asked to explore enhancing the facilities on Chandigarh tourism app to provide better services for the tourists.
Another key area of focus was “Tourism for All”, with the Secretary Tourism directing the department to promote activities tailored to senior citizens at various locations around the city, a senior official of the administration said.
He recommended expanding the concept of the Senior Citizens’ Corner, which currently exists in Sector 17, to other areas, to foster an inclusive tourism experience.
Open food festival, says Brar
Stating that it was important to ensure memorable experience for the tourists both domestic as well as international, Brar recommended organising a food festival at the Plaza, Sector 17, which would feature food vendors from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other states of north India.
The Secretary (Tourism) also asked to organise weekly events at various parks across Chandigarh on Sundays, where citizens could also exhibit their musical talent.
“The initiatives discussed in the meeting are part of Chandigarh’s ongoing efforts to improve its tourism offerings and enhance the city’s global appeal,” it was added.
Brar also visited the Le Corbusier Centre, Sector 19, Capitol Complex and the Pierre Jeanneret house, Sector 5, to identify opportunities for promoting these significant landmarks. The secretary discussed various strategies aimed at making the sites a more prominent tourist attraction, recognising its unique place in Chandigarh’s heritage.
