(Express photo)The ‘City Beautiful’ is likely to get much-needed respite from the extended spell of the sweltering heat in the latter part of this week, as monsoon in the region will arrive on June 28 and 29, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The forecasting agency said though the thunderstorm activity will pick up from June 26, which may lead to pre-monsoon showers, monsoon will officially be advancing on June 28 and 29.
Scientist Shivender Singh from Chandigarh meteorological centre told The Indian Express that extremely heavy rainfall is predicted on June 28 in parts of Punjab and Haryana and on June 29 in Chandigarh for which we have also issued a yellow warning, adding that these will be monsoon showers.
“This time, overall, it is predicted that monsoon will be above normal,” Singh added.
While the weathermen has predicted light to moderate rain at isolated places from Wednesday onwards to June 27 in Punjab and Haryana, showers will pick up from June 28 and become heavy on June 29 in the region. Singh also said that the said spell is likely to be accompanied with thunderstorm and gusty winds with a wind speed reaching 30-50 kmph at certain places from June 27 to June 29 in the region. He added that the prevailing heatwave conditions over isolated pockets of Punjab are likely to continue for the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Chandigarh on Tuesday was 39.9 degrees Celsius, which was a departure of 3.6 degrees from normal.
