MORE THAN a year after a 31-year-old was stabbed to death in Shashtri Nagar, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the trial till further orders after the victim’s family alleged involvement of two police officials in the murder and accused Chandigarh Police of delay in trial.
“The trial court is directed to adjourn the matter beyond the date given by this court, till the next date of hearing,” a single bench of the high court said in an order, while adjourning a petition filed by the family to November 26.
The court also directed the SSP Chandigarh to go into the matter and file her own affidavit in reply to the petition in view of the allegations. “To be shown in the urgent motion list,” the order reads.
The victim Ajay on August 1, 2018 was stabbed to death near the Shastri Nagar light point. Accused Deepak is currently facing trial under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC at the District Court in Chandigarh. The victim was owner of Shreeji Packers and Movers and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
In the plea filed by Ajay’s father Ram Avtar, it has been alleged that among the two persons who are being named as accused for murder by them, one is a retired police official and the other is a serving police official in the Chandigarh Police. Because of involvement of the police officials, the petition alleges, that even the SIT formed to investigate the case was delaying the matter as regards any supplementary report to be submitted to the trial court.
In May 2019, the police had told the trial court that further investigation of the matter is being done by the SIT and in every likelihood it was to conclude the same till June 30. Ajay’s family had initially alleged that three to four people stabbed him to death. Only one person is facing trial in the case at present.
